Auburn Elementary 6th graders served the community today by volunteering at the Auburn Cemetery. They gathered and disposed of trash, picked up branches, planted flowers, spread mulch, and replaced items that had blown off graves with the recent wind and storms. They also were able to get an up close view of the neighboring bison. Julie and Wayne Copp shared with the students stories of well-known and historic Auburnites whose graves are located in the cemetery. Students had a picnic lunch, then competed a scavenger hunt where they located and took rubbings of some of the things they had learned about earlier this week.
Prior to this community service project, students learned about cemetery etiquette, as well as about types of gravestones and about common historical symbols found on many gravestones. In addition to learning about cemeteries, they also learned about American bison, in hopes of getting to see them up close...which they did!
Students felt a great deal of pride in helping maintain the Auburn Cemetery today. They worked hard, and were very respectful and well-behaved. They received several compliments from Auburn Lions Club members, who volunteered alongside the 6th graders. Great job, 6th graders. Auburn appreciates your service!

Today’s ROAR assembly ended with a fun minute-to-win-it game of who can land the most frisbees on the circle in one minute. Watch to the end to see which grade level won!

First-graders from across the district took turns visiting Auburn-Washburn's 50-acre Outdoor Environmental Laboratory last week for a fun and educational "One in the Sun" field trip.

As part of their curriculum, they:
🥾Went on a nature hike
💦Learned about the stages of the water cycle
☀️Participated in three different solar-related experiments
🌘Learned about (and in some cases, viewed) the partial solar eclipse
🦉Interacted with furry, scaly, and feathery creatures brought in by Topeka Zoo staff

Gifted to Auburn-Washburn in 1993 for the sole purpose of environmental education, the land features two mobile classrooms, ponds, nature trails, and open-air pavilions.
